Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). the procedure
The video demonstrates the process of ablation of the thyroid nodule. Radiofrequency ablation of the nodule is a common procedure used around the world. We have been using it in Armenia for about 6 years.
RFA is performed on an outpatient basis. The entire process lasts up to an hour.
Before the procedure, the patient needs to remove jewelry and removable dental appliances.
During the procedure, the patient lies comfortably with the neck extended slightly. If necessary, sedative medication is provided. Ground pads are placed on the thighs.
The neck is treated with an antiseptic agent. A local anesthetic is injected.
Under ultrasound control, the RFA electrode is inserted directly into the nodule. The ablation procedure starts. The doctor moves the electrode around the node several times, monitoring the entire process with ultrasound. At the end of the procedure, the doctor will use ultrasound to make sure that the ablation results are satisfactory. A small bandage will be applied on the neck.
You will be monitored in the clinic for about an hour, after which you can return to your daily routine.
It is recommended to apply an ice pad to the neck to prevent swelling. In case of pain, painkillers can be used.
Side effects are very uncommon, you may have ear or jaw pain after the procedure. If you notice swelling in the neck or increasing pain, contact your doctor.
It is necessary to visit the clinic 6 and 12 months after the ablation so that the doctor can monitor the healing process and evaluate the results of the ablation.
