Treatment for thyroid cysts

Usually exclusively cystic nodules have lowest risks of malignancy (less than 1%), nodules with half cystic content and without suspicious characteristics have low risks of malignancy (less than 3%). After confirming non malignancy, the doctor decides whether it requires treatment or not, and which treatment option is best for you. Primarily, treatment is required for nodules which develop compressive symptoms.

Treatment options include surgery, needle aspiration, and ethanol ablation, which is otherwise called PEI- percutaneous ethanol injection. Surgery is not a preferred option because of the complication’s risks, while needle aspiration lacks effectiveness and has higher recurrence risks.

The best treatment option for cystic thyroid nodules causing symptoms is minimally invasive intervention called ethanol injection. Percutaneous ethanol injection causes permanent tissue death by resulting in the destruction of necrotic, fibrotic, and thrombotic components within the lesion.

A number of studies have proven the safety and efficacy of this method.
