How is the biopsy done
Biopsy is an ambulatory procedure. It does not require special preparations. Inform your doctor if you are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners). Biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure performed under ultrasound guidance and while the patient is awake. Firstly, the doctor treats the neck area with an antiseptic and then applies a local anesthetic.
With the help of an ultrasound device the interventional radiologist locates the nodule in order to insert the needle into it. He uses a very fine needle, thinner than what is used for taking blood from your vein. He will then ask you to try not to move, not to make sound or swallow during the time of inserting the needle. After the sample is taken, it is sent to a laboratory for further examination.
Biopsy itself is a painless procedure. You may only feel some pressure from the ultrasound probe or feel little discomfort when the needle is inserted. The whole procedure takes 5-10 minutes. A small bandage will be placed on your neck and you can go back to your daily routine.
