What is ablation
Thermal ablation is a treatment option that allows to get rid of thyroid nodules without surgical procedure. During the ablation procedure the size of the nodule degrades while the gland itself remains undamaged.
There are two main techniques of ablation, one is called radiofrequency ablation (RFA), the other is called microwave ablation (MWA), and as the words imply these techniques use either radio waves or microwaves to perform ablation. Due to the preservation of healthy tissue after the ablation, the thyroid gland continues to function normally, and the patient no longer requires long-term medication.
For about 15 years, this method has been used all over the world and has recorded good results. Ablation is performed by an interventional radiologist, a doctor who specializes in minimally invasive procedures.
