Signs and symptoms
There are different types of diseases that affect your thyroid gland, and the symptoms you may develop depend on the disease.
In case of overactive thyroid or high levels of thyroid hormone in your blood, you can develop the following symptoms
- anxiety
- mood changes,
- irritability
- weight loss
- nervousness
- hyperactivity
- sweating or hot intolerance
- hand tremor
- hair loss
- Hypomenorrhea or amenorrhea
- vision problems
In case of underactive thyroid or low levels of thyroid hormone in the blood, you may develop the following symptoms
- sleep disorders
- tiredness or fatigue
- inability to focus
- weight gain
- skin and hair dryness
- depression
- cold intolerance
- frequent, heavy menstrual cycles
- joint and muscle pain
In elderly patients, hypothyroidism can cause memory problems and depression, in children it can cause growth and development delay, while in teenagers it can lead to early puberty.
If left untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to problems like
- hoarseness of voice
- facial swelling
- low heart beat
- hearing problems
- anemia
